Give Your All As If It Costs You Nothing

One of my favorite feminist writers, Simone de Beauvoir, says this of true generosity: “You give your all, and yet you always feel as if it costs you nothing.”

I am reminded, too, of these celebrated words from Buddha: “Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.”

I have shared happy experiences with my husband’s daughter – things she’d never done before I came into her life. Her mom is now doing those things with her. I could choose to feel bitter that our “special time” has been taken over by her mom, but why? I choose instead to feel glad.

Happiness never decreases by being shared.
